News for the week beginning 1st August 2010

 

Welcome to all visitors to our church from other parts of the country and from abroad. We hope your stay in Southampton will be a happy one.

 First Sunday of August: There are no Traidcraft or Cafod stalls after Mass today, but there will be refreshments in the hall after 10.30 Mass today and for all the Sundays in August. Please join us for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat.

 Papal Visit: Would those people who will be going to the Hyde Park Vigil and/or the Cofton Park Mass (ie who filled in the forms committing themselves to this) please hand in payment for their Pilgrim Packs (£10 for Hyde Park and £25 for Cofton Park) as soon as possible. If paying by cheque, please make cheques payable to Immaculate Conception Church. The Pilgrim Packs will be distributed around the end of August or beginning of September, and will definitely reach you before the Pope’s Visit begins (but don’t expect anything by post!).  Inside the Pilgrim Pack with be a bracelet/band which is also the ticket for entrance. 

 First Communion 2011: If your child will be 8 in the coming school year (ie, was born on or before 31st August 2003 and is in Year 3 or above this September) and you would like her/him to prepare for First Communion next year, please fill in one of the Registration forms in the porch and return it by 10th October. Dates will be the same for all our Pastoral Area:

· Enrolment on the 1st Sunday of Advent (28th November)

· First Confession on Saturday 19th March 2011

· First Communion on Sunday 26th June 2011

 A Fun Craft Afternoon: Saturday 21st August, 2 - 5pm in the Parish Hall. We will be making posters and other displays, ready for One World Day (at the end of October). Lots of glueing, painting, cutting, sticking etc....could get messy !! All ages welcome . . . but please no unaccompanied children. Tea and scones to finish!!  Yummie !!

 Disability Awareness: Does our community / parish enable you fully to access  every element of parish life, regardless of your abilities?  Would you like to participate more, and what can we do to help you achieve this?  Any ideas/suggestions please contact Reena 07802 954 936

 

Remember Hiroshima/Nagasaki: Commemorate the victims of the bombing, 6th and 9th August 1945: Float Lanterns for Peace on the River Itchen, Riverside Park at 8.30pm, Saturday 7th August. (Contact 8022 9363 Southampton CND)

 Yoga: There is a yoga class being run in our church hall over the summer – Monday nights, 8 to 9pm, all levels welcome, £5, teacher: Marion Highmore (tel 8034 3270)

 Second collections        

·      The Day for Life collection last week amounted to £361.58 (including tax reclaimed)

·      The is no second collection this week, nor for the whole of August

 Covenant Ladies’ Group: The next meeting will be a Quiz ‘Brain Teasers’ on 13th August at 2pm in the Methodist Church.

Walk the World! - Saturday 28th August

 An opportunity for young people (and not so young!) to walk and raise funds for World Youth Day and CAFOD around Stubbington and Lee-on-the-Solent along the South Coast.

 

The walk should be suitable for all and is approximately 8 miles along flat terrain and follows a circular route.

 

The day will start with a short liturgy and there will be checkpoints along the route to reflect on the work of CAFOD and the message for World Youth Day.

 

·           Start:   Immaculate Conception, Bells Lane, Stubbington. PO14 2PL

·           Lunch: St John the Evangelist Church, South Parade, Lee-on-the-Solent

·           Finish: Immaculate Conception, Bells Lane, Stubbington. PO14 2PL

Youth Day in November: YC South presents “A Noble Adventure.” A fantastic afternoon for young people aged 11 to 25 to explore the journey of faith. Presentations, workshops and a youth Mass to celebrate the Feast of Christ the King and National Youth Day.  Joint venture over four Pastoral Areas and the World Youth Day members. Great opportunity of gather with other young people for faith, fun, food and friendship. More details will be available soon. Put the date on your calendar. Sunday 21 November 2010.  Jamie’s Computers is a division of the Society of St James, the Southampton homelessness charity. You can donate your used IT equipment to Jamie’s, thus helping reduce your impact on the environment, and also giving vulnerable people opportunities to learn new skills. All hard drives received are wiped securely. The refurbished computers are used in the third world, or sold here. You can drop off your old IT equipment Monday – Friday from 10am – 4pm at Unit 33, Mount Pleasant Industrial Estate, SO14 0SP.
